Changing Your Money Mindset With Affirmations

If you’re looking to change your mindset around the subject of money, a good place to start is with affirmations. Words are powerful, especially when we repeat them to ourselves over and over again. The trouble is, we often have negative mantras when it comes to money. Things like “money is hard won”, “life’s a struggle” and “you must work hard for money”. These kinds of phrases are often deeply embedded into our subconscious mind from experiences and repetitions we heard from our parents.

Think for a money of some of your early childhood experiences. What were your parent’s attitudes around money? Unless you’re from a very conscious household, it’s highly likely that your parents brought you up with some limiting beliefs and ideas around money. You can uncover these by looking at your own attitudes towards money, work, self worth and self image.

One of my parent’s affirmations was “it’s a struggle”. I heard it again and again while growing up, and only became conscious of it in my 20’s. I wonder how much simply went in unchallenged in my former years.

Changing Your Money Mindset With Affirmations

So how can you change your money mindset with affirmations? Simple! Replace your old negative “affirmations” or mantras with some new empowering ones. First, spend some time thinking about what beliefs you are carrying that you cannot immediately see. These can take some digging out. Look at your parent’s beliefs and ideas around money. What kind of experience are you currently having regarding money, lack, abundance and feeling good/bad about your financial situation?

Find some of your old mantras which aren’t helpful, and observe when they come up. Once you have identified some of your limiting ideas around money, you’re in a much better position to make the necessary changes. The key is to stop giving energy to the negative ideas. So when you catch yourself running off an old mantra “it’s hard to earn money”, “life’s a struggle” and so on, simply notice.

Now you are in a good position to replace old, disempowering beliefs with new mantras.

Here’s a few you can choose from:

  • Money comes easily and frequently
  • I always have enough
  • I love making money doing what I love
  • I get paid for being me
  • Money is always flowing towards me
  • I love money and money loves me

The degree to which you agree or disagree with these statements should tell you something about how you life currently is. If you resist them then there is definitely some work to be done. Do you want life to be a struggle or do you want life to be easy and light?

Joe Vitale

The author Joe Vitale shared a story about his becoming an author. He recalled how he had imagined it to be a struggle and his imagination made this true for him too. At one point he was homeless. Later he recalled that in his mind he thought his role models all struggled with money, so he created a similar situation because he thought he had to go through the same.

What stories are you telling yourself about your journey? That it should be a struggle? Or that you can easily flow with life, and things get easier and easier?

Not only are affirmations useful for reprogramming the subconscious mind, to make your life work better, but they are also indicators as to where you currently are. Read the above affirmations again and put a score next to each one – 10 being you agree wholeheartedly and 1 meaning you thoroughly disagree. The higher your score overall, the more likely you are to be living in alignment with abundance and bliss.

If you have a low score, these statements probably aren’t true for you (yet).

Choose Statements Which Empower

So if an affirmation such as “money comes easily and frequently” isn’t a good fit for you, choose one which is more acceptable to you. It could be you have been repeating a negative mantra around money, such as “money doesn’t grow on trees”, or that “you must suffer to make money” for example.

Your ideas around money, wealth and prosperity will likely have been working for some time. So you cannot expect new affirmations to suddenly shift your life overnight. At first, you may even wrestle with the new ideas, re-affirming the old ones because those are more aligned with your current experience. Persevere though and you will slowly shift your mindset around money.
