Bringing awareness to your suffering is another way to shift your vibration. Most of us are completely unconscious when it comes to our patterns of thinking. Some of our thinking can be unhelpful too, such as when we fixate on our problems, or we worry about the future. Perhaps you’ve had a trauma in your life, and your mind is continually drawn to it?
Through mindfulness and meditation, we can create more awareness around our thinking habits and this can help us choose our thinking more carefully.
As mentioned in many a self help book, including Think and Grow Rich, thoughts do become things. Not immediately, but over long periods of time.
Shifting Your Mindset With Awareness – Bringing Awareness To Suffering
Meditation is a great way to bring awareness to your suffering. By meditating, we begin to observe the thoughts we have, without attaching to them. By doing this regularly, we can start to recognise thought patterns which are unhelpful.
When you have an unhelpful thought habit, you are giving attention and energy to what Eckhart Tolle calls the pain body. The pain body is an energetic “organism” which resides in the energy field of a person. When you continue focusing on a painful thought, you are giving more energy to the pain body. Over time, it becomes a greater part of who you are, and eventually can lead to more and more problems.

This is the subconscious part of you which is actually attracting your life’s circumstances.
Shifting Your Mindset With Awareness – Shifting The Pain
If you have had something bad happen in your life, you may have some trauma trapped in the body. The body “keeps the score” as it were, and remembers events as feelings. If we have had a bad trauma, it can negatively affect us going forwards in our lives.
So if you have problems with money, for example, it can often stem from a negative experience or trauma.
We may feel worthless if we have been treated badly, for example, or had a very negative experience. The trauma reminds us of this feeling and so it can be very difficult to shift. Our thinking comes about because of our negative experience and so we perpetuate problems for years because of the trauma.
By bringing your awareness to your breath during meditation, you can shine the light of awareness on your thinking behaviour.
Meditating
Meditating doesn’t have to be done in a cross-legged position, or even with your eyes closed. You can simply sit in a quiet place and focus on your breath. As time passes, you will naturally get pulled back into the “thinker”, and start talking to yourself in your head. When you observe this has happened, gently bring your awareness back to your breath again. It can help to count up to 10 in your mind. Giving your mind a job like this helps to quieten the mind and gives you something to focus on.
Practice each day, beginning with a few minutes and slowly extend the time period. Over time you will find an awareness outside of your thinking where you can “watch” the thinking mind without getting drawn into it.
The thoughts you observe can give you a huge insight into why your life isn’t working in any given area. Often it is a poor self image which is to blame which can often stem from childhood trauma, or bad experiences.

Summary
There’s a saying “where attention goes, energy flows”. So if you are giving your energy to pain, or worry, it is highly likely that you are bringing about negative situations or circumstances in your life due to reinforcing the pain body through negative thoughts.
By spending some time each day in quiet meditation, watching the thoughts without entering into them, you can slowly bring awareness to your thinking mind and detach from its games. Make this a regular practice and your life will definitely change.
