Here’s why mindset matters for escaping 9 To 5? Here’s a quick analogy. I like the analogy of joining a gym because it’s relatable. Nearly everyone can relate to the experience of joining the gym, or taking on some challenge to improve their fitness.

Have you ever set yourself a goal, of getting in shape but then not followed through with it? Have you ever thought to ask yourself why you didn’t follow through? There’s several reasons such as laziness, apathy and old habit patterns interfering in the aim of getting yourself a better body and getting in shape. They follow though and build habits into their daily routine to make it a long term plan. If you don’t have a strong enough reason to achieve something, when obstacles arise, which they will, you will fall back into old patterns of behaviour and justify giving up!

They know statistically that most people will quit within a month or two, despite their New Year’s Resolution to get themselves in shape! When attempting anything worthwhile, and particularly something difficult, there’s huge resistance. Not just from the endeavour itself, but also from your own patterns of thought, belief and unconscious competing desires and intentions.

Many of our deep-seated beliefs stem from our childhood. We wanted to make our parents happy and so took on board many of their ideas in order to please them. The problem arises later in life when you can’t overcome these deep seated ideas and beliefs which shape your current reality. No amount of conscious effort on the “outside” will help if you are fighting unconscious beliefs on the inside.

It’s like running against a brick wall. The secret saboteur is actually your unconscious beliefs working against you!

So how can we change these hidden saboteurs of success to turn our lives around permanently? When it comes to escaping 9 to 5, the inner work is just as necessary as the “outer” work of building an online business. The inner work is working on our mindset, attitudes and thinking which ultimately helps or hinders us to create results in our lives.

Reprogramming the subconscious mind is something most people are unfamiliar with. That’s why behaviour doesn’t change that much. When we try and effect change, we are faced with our old programming and habitual behaviour. To create an online business, or achieve any kind of goal, we must change our habits to align with the new goal. But that creates conflict with who we are already.

The fastest answer to this problem is to create a new identity, rather than “striving” for a goal. An identity is who you believe you are which creates behaviours which support the identity. Think about all the negative repetitions we tell ourselves repeatedly in our heads over and over again. Most of them can be undermining and unhelpful, particularly if you have received some negative programming from your childhood – which, let’s face it, most of us have! By creating a new “meta-story”, a story we tell ourselves to support a new goal and identity, we achieve two things. We stop ourselves from telling ourselves the “old story” which is unhelpful and fill our mind instead with an new more empowering one which aligns with our goals.
